How do lessons work exactly?
For my younger students, afternoon lessons are sixty minutes long, once a week. Students will be moving between three stations during their time, getting extra practice, music theory review, and instruction time with the teacher each week.
Morning lessons for adults are thirty minutes once a week due to differing format.
What ages do you teach?
I teach both children and adults.
My firm rule is that children start piano lessons no earlier than seven years old.
Do you teach neurodivergent students?
I do have experience with students who have ADHD, but no formal training past that. If you are looking for a teacher that specializes with students with neurodivergence, please feel free to reach out, and I can suggest some great teachers that do have that special training.
**The biggest part of finding the best teacher for you/your student is communication. Always disclose pertinent information to the teacher so they can support the student and make sure the student gets the most out of their lessons.**
What all does each month’s tuition cover?
Tuition includes weekly private lessons and recitals planned by the teacher; DVMTA events are separate.
Is tuition refundable?
No. Tuition is nonrefundable. Tuition holds the time slot for the student for the entire month. This is to help motivate the student to complete the time paid for.
Are music books provided by the teacher?
No. The lesson books will be provided by the student/parent. The appropriate book(s) (and where to purchase them) for each prospective student will be recommended by the teacher once their current level is assessed.
What all does a student need to bring each week?
It is recommended that all students, no matter their age have a dedicated bag for their music/books, a notebook to track their progress, a pencil, water bottle, and all the music being currently worked on.
What happens if a student forgets his/her books for that week's lesson?
The teacher reserves the right to run drills of her own devising, or will attempt to find appropriate music in her possession that might work, but it is highly recommended that a student remembers their music each week.
When is tuition due?
Tuition is due on the first day of the month. There is a $25 late fee if tuition is paid after the second lesson. Fees are non-refundable.
Do you travel to the homes of your student(s)?
No. Lessons are taught from the music room in my home in East Mesa in order to maintain a safe, distraction-free space for my students.
Who is allowed to sit in during the lesson?
Due to the current format of lessons, only the students are allowed in the studio during a lesson in order to keep distractions few.
Do the parents have to be present during the lesson?
Students may be dropped off, but should be picked up promptly right at the end of their lesson, unless other arrangements have been made.
Are cellphones allowed at lessons?
Students may bring cellphones to lessons in order to coordinate with their parents for pick ups/etc., but the phones need to stay put away in their music bags during the length of their lesson.
For any emergency, please contact Lori Sprague directly.
What’s expected of the student prior to each lesson?
Lessons are expected to be prepared for each week by consistent practicing of assigned pieces as close to daily as possible.
Students are also encouraged to ask any questions they have between lessons by calling/messaging the teacher. Parents’ calls and questions are also welcomed.
Neatness is recommended. Students are requested to come to lessons with nails trimmed.
Hand washing happens before each lesson.
Gum chewing/eating is not permitted In the piano studio.
How often should a student practice?
The minimum should be thirty minutes five days a week. More is recommended when progressing to/at a higher level/preparing for a special event.
For younger students, parents are asked to assist the practice habits of their student(s) by providing a practice area that is free of distraction and conducive to good learning habits. Students should practice at least five times a week for a length of time agreed upon with parents and teacher.
Each student should be encouraged to be responsible for practicing and recording practice times if requested by the teacher.
If a student misses a week/lesson, is the full tuition still owed?
Yes. (Only one makeup lesson is allowed during a specified time slot per month. Please refer to the Makeup Policy for further details.)
What happens if the student is late for their lesson?
The time allotted for each student’s lesson is reserved for his or her exclusive use. If the student shows up late, they will be taught for the remainder of the lesson assigned to them, and no longer.
Make-up lessons in these instances are not allowed.
Are early arrivals permitted?
No, due to the possibility of another student already utilizing that time slot.
How many recitals are held each year?
Two recitals (outside of DVMTA events) will be held each year. All children and youth are expected to participate, and adult students are invited to participate.
The recital areas have plenty of seating and friends and family are welcome to attend.
Families should arrive promptly and avoid leaving during recitals. If you must leave early, please leave only during the applause.
Performers should dress appropriately for the occasion (i.e. no pjs or ripped jeans!). Dress for success!
What is DVMTA?
DVMTA stands for Desert Valley Music Teachers Association. As a fellow member, my students have the option to participate in their events organized each year.
The aim of DVMTA is to represent the highest standards of music teaching and performance, provide continuous ongoing professional growth and training opportunities for all members, foster cultural activities for students, parents and the community, and to encourage excellence in student preparation and performance through honors/awards.
